DIY vs. Hiring a Pro: Where the Money Actually Goes

How installed prices split between materials and labor for common projects, and how to decide whether doing it yourself is worth it.

Most installed prices are part materials and part labor, overhead and profit. The gap between material cost and installed cost is the most you can save by doing the work yourself. It is not guaranteed savings: tools, mistakes, time and warranty all count.

Material vs. installed, by project (US 2026 national ranges)

Project Materials only Installed by a pro
Wood privacy fence $10–$30 per linear ft $25–$50 per linear ft
Pressure-treated deck $10–$20 per sq ft $25–$50 per sq ft
Composite deck $16–$32 per sq ft $40–$80 per sq ft
Luxury vinyl plank flooring $1.50–$10 per sq ft $4–$16 per sq ft
Laminate flooring $1–$5 per sq ft $4–$14 per sq ft
Interior paint $20–$60 per gallon $1–$3 per sq ft of wall

Sources for each range are listed in the Cost Index.

Good DIY candidates

  • Painting. Low tool cost, forgiving, and labor is most of the price.
  • Click-lock flooring (LVP, laminate) over a flat, sound subfloor.
  • Mulch, gravel and small paver patios. The work is heavy but simple.
  • Fences on flat, easy-to-dig ground, if you can rent a post-hole auger.

Usually worth hiring

  • Roofing. Fall risk, manufacturer warranty requirements, and tear-off disposal.
  • HVAC and electrical. Licensing, permits, refrigerant handling and safety.
  • Structural work such as raised decks, stairs and load-bearing walls, where permits and inspections matter.
  • Windows in older homes, where hidden rot or lead paint changes the job.

Hidden DIY costs to budget

Tool purchases or rentals, delivery fees, disposal (dumpsters run hundreds of dollars), permits, and your time, typically two to three times longer than a crew. Factor in rework too: a first-time tiler may waste far more than the 10% overage in the estimate.

Every cost calculator on BuildCalc that has a DIY option shows both numbers side by side, so you can see the labor premium for your own project.
